The IKEA KALLAX is one of those pieces of furniture that somehow ends up doing a completely different job in every room. We recently assembled two for the same customer: one for the children’s play area downstairs and another for the home office upstairs. In the play area, it gave toys, books, games and storage boxes a proper home. In the office, the exact same unit became useful storage for files, paperwork, books, stationery and all the other things that normally end up taking over the desk.

That flexibility is probably why the KALLAX remains such a popular IKEA storage unit. It can work as toy storage, a bookcase, home office shelving, bedroom storage, craft storage, vinyl record storage or even a simple room divider in the right space. Add baskets, boxes, doors or drawer inserts and it can be adapted again as your needs change. Sometimes the most useful furniture isn’t the piece with one very specific purpose — it’s the one that quietly solves six different problems over its lifetime.
